Hey Spo, I just got through Corky Bell's book on turbocharging. Pretty good reference for sizing and other concerns, readable... a few quirks though... found on Amazon. I'm still thinkin' about a single turbo after the cat (which will still pass emissions here, I think), seperate oil system, IC in place of a relocated battery... though I may go after the manual hub mod for the mileage (I can get 20mpg now), or just buy a d*mn Prius - what with ga$!

thats cool, I have corky bell's "supercharged" book and my friend has the turbo book. Like 50% of the information is the same in both books like A/R and intercooling section. A post cat turbo would be fine but you may find that your boost lag increased since the turbo has to spool up the pressure for all that extra pipe. As for mileage... it IS an SUV and the extra thousand pounds more then a car is going to mean some smaller numbers in the mpg. I think, however, you could have better mileage if you boost it rather than get a higher displacement engine. And the montero sport is alot more attractive than a prius Some things to ponder I suppose...

Mind you, I don't WANT a Prius, and frankly I am impressed that my MS gets 20 - though I had a 79 Scout with the 304 V8 that got 20 on the highway too, but more like 8-12 typically...
I did try to find availability on that turbo diesel that Mitsu offered off shore in the MS, not much luck- kept finding their bigger truck engines (anybody got data, or ideas on this??).
The spool up time would be the time to increase RPM of the turbo - like .5 to .7 seconds according to Mr. Bell - the pressure change would move at the speed of sound in the pipes, so yea its a bit longer, but very small increase in lag due to the length of pipe. The rear location looks attractive from the packaging and temperature viewpoint though, at least it's one way to go.
Your twin turbo idea looks cool, just really tough to stick the hardware in there and deal with temps. I think cost for me would be #1 reason to figure out a single turbo solution... ...think, think, think...

ahh yes. Diesel is fun stuff indeed, not quite race material (the huge plumes of black smoke make for an eventful drag race), but if you wanted to tow the moon... the cummins turbo diesel has 300hp and 600 ft/lbs of torque from a 5.9L v-6 (thats some huge pistons) The benefit of diesel would be the ability to simply dial in extra HP. And you have to drive a little farther to fuel up. I work for [M] 0 p 4 r now btw

I just caught a blurb on a manufacterer putting dual supercharging on a small engine - they ran a belt driven supercharger for boost right off idle, and had a turbo for higher rpm's (I think it was VW)... since your idea was two turbos, you could do something similar - one for low/quick TRUCK boost and the other sized for higher in the power band. The Rx7 did this with sequential turbos...

Hmm, yes, I could see the use of having a stage 2 and stage 4 turbo in line... Come high rpms when the second turbo kicks in, the first small one will be glowing red hot after reaching it's peak. I guess its worth a try, but I intend to use a small shot of nitrous for the low-end hp. Oh I dont know. We have plenty of time to figure it out.

Currently $840 in turbo fund. I've decided not to get a larger engine (keeping my 3.0). Just as a side note, who all is attempting the 300 whp mark?

I'm with it 1000% in spirt, but a few more projects have to finish before I can play - but I am looking at salvage turbo options, so put me on the 1 year to go list...

$1060 Workin' hard, gettin' paid. Watch out for shaft play when buying used. Also see why the last person gave it up and ask for a warranty long enough to have the turbo in the car for a few "test" weeks.
I should have the actual turbos in a few days.

had to find a diff place to do the cams. It will cost a little more than i was planning but should be done by next week. Currently waiting on the ins check to come through after my truck was broke into. The only good thing is that my gass mileage is back up to 20 mpg without the speakers and amp in back. Clay
